House Settlement Update

NCAA ROSTER LIMIT CHANGES

Major changes are reshaping college athletics. Under the House Settlement, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and new roster limits have been established — creating significantly more scholarship opportunities for student-athletes.

Scholarships Removed

Traditional scholarship limits are gone. Schools can now offer partial or full scholarships to every athlete on the roster, up to the new roster limit.

More Opportunities

Roster limits are significantly higher than old scholarship limits — meaning more athletes can receive financial aid, especially in non-revenue sports.

Designated Athletes

Athletes on rosters as of April 7, 2025 or recruited before that date may be "designated" and exempt from counting against new roster limits.

Essential guides and strategies to help you succeed in the recruiting process

Social Media Strategy for Recruiting

Your social media presence is often the first impression college coaches have of you. Use these platforms strategically to showcase your athletic abilities, character, and commitment.

What TO DO

  • Post training videos, game highlights, and workout clips
  • Share academic achievements and community service
  • Tag coaches and schools appropriately (not excessively)
  • Use professional profile photos and bios
  • Engage positively with teammates and coaches
  • Keep accounts public or create separate recruiting profiles
  • Include measurables in your bio (height, weight, position, grad year)
  • Respond professionally to coach messages and comments

What NOT TO DO

  • ×Post inappropriate content, profanity, or controversial opinions
  • ×Share photos of partying, alcohol, or risky behavior
  • ×Trash talk opponents, referees, or other athletes
  • ×Complain about coaches, teammates, or playing time
  • ×Over-tag schools or spam coaches with messages
  • ×Post during games or team events
  • ×Share private team information or strategies
  • ×Engage in negative or argumentative comments

Platform-Specific Tips

Instagram

Best for highlight reels, training clips, and visual storytelling. Use Stories for behind-the-scenes content.

Twitter/X

Share stats, game updates, and achievements. Follow and engage with college programs.

LinkedIn

Professional profile highlighting academics, leadership, and career goals.

Facebook

Connect with recruiting groups and follow college programs for updates.

Understanding NIL (Name, Image, Likeness)

NIL allows college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness. Understanding NIL opportunities can be a factor in your college decision, but it shouldn't be the only factor.

What is NIL?

As of July 2021, NCAA athletes can earn compensation for their name, image, and likeness through endorsements, sponsorships, social media, personal appearances, and more—without losing their eligibility.

NIL Opportunities
  • Social media sponsorships
  • Local business endorsements
  • Autograph signings
  • Personal brand merchandise
  • Camps and clinics
  • Content creation
Important Rules
  • Must comply with state laws
  • Cannot use school logos/marks
  • Report deals to your school
  • No pay-for-play arrangements
  • Cannot conflict with team activities
  • May need to pay taxes on earnings
Questions to Ask Schools
  • What NIL support does the school provide?
  • Are there NIL collectives?
  • What education is provided?
  • How does the market size affect opportunities?
  • What resources are available?
  • Are there legal/tax advisors?

Important Note: While NIL opportunities are exciting, they should not be the primary factor in choosing a college. Focus on finding the right academic, athletic, and cultural fit first. NIL opportunities will follow if you perform well and build your brand authentically.

Finding the Right Fit

Choosing the right college is about more than just athletics. Consider these key factors to find a program where you'll thrive both on and off the field.

Athletic Fit

  • Playing Time

Will you compete for immediate playing time or develop over time?

  • Coaching Style

Does the coaching philosophy match your learning style?

  • Competition Level

Is the athletic level appropriate for your abilities?

  • Team Culture

Do you connect with current players and team values?

  • Facilities

Are training facilities, equipment, and resources adequate?

  • Athletic Success

What is the program's competitive history and trajectory?

Academic Fit

  • Major Offerings

Does the school offer your intended major or career path?

  • Academic Rigor

Can you handle the academic demands while competing?

  • Class Size

Do you prefer large lectures or small, intimate classes?

  • Academic Support

What tutoring and academic resources are available for athletes?

  • Graduation Rates

What percentage of athletes graduate on time?

  • Career Services

What internship and job placement support exists?

Social & Cultural Fit

  • Campus Culture

Does the overall campus vibe match your personality?

  • Student Body

Do you feel comfortable with the diversity and size?

  • Social Life

What activities and organizations interest you beyond sports?

  • Location

Urban or rural? Close to home or far away?

  • Housing

What are the living arrangements for athletes?

  • Campus Safety

Do you feel safe and comfortable on campus?

Financial Fit

  • Scholarship Offer

What percentage is covered? Is it renewable?

  • Total Cost

What are tuition, room, board, and other expenses?

  • Financial Aid

What additional aid or grants are available?

  • Out-of-Pocket

Can your family afford the remaining costs?

  • Student Debt

How much debt will you graduate with?

  • ROI

Will your degree and career prospects justify the cost?

College Visit Checklist

Use these questions during official and unofficial visits to evaluate each program:

Attend a practice and game
Meet with academic advisors
Tour athletic and academic facilities
Spend time with current players
Explore the campus and surrounding area
Ask about injury rates and medical care
Discuss scholarship details and expectations
Review the athletic department's academic support
Ask about post-graduation success stories
Trust your gut feeling about the environment

Remember: You're choosing a college, not just a team. You'll spend more time as a student than as an athlete. Pick a school where you'll succeed academically, grow personally, and be happy—even if you get injured or stop playing. The right fit feels right in your gut.
