NASCAR legend, Dale Earnhardt Jr, his wife, Amy, their daughter, Isla and two pilots were involved in a small plane crash Thursday afternoon that has left The NASCAR universe in shock. Of course, Dale Jr and his family were later released from the hospital, but the crash was still scary given Jr’s history with concussions
Dale Jr and his family were traveling to Bristol Tennesee so that the former Cup Series drivers could cover this weekend’s activity at Bristol when they skidded off the runway during landing. The incident happened just outside of Bristol Tennesse and was later confirmed by his sister, Kelly.
“I can confirm Dale, Amy & Isla along with his two pilots were involved in a crash in Bristol TN this afternoon” Kelly’s tweet read,” Everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation. We have no further information at this time. Thank you for your understanding,”
The incident is a particularly scary one due to the fact that Earnhardt’s wife, Amy, and daughter, Isla were also present, but both luckily escaped uninjured. Jr, however, was transported to a local hospital for minor cuts and abrasions after the crash.
Another big fear after the crash was Jr’s concussion history, which brought his driving career to an unfortunate end in 2018. He retired with over 30 wins in NASCAR’s top series and even won two Daytona 500’s, two Pepsi 400’s and The All-star race.
According to The Federal Aviation Administration, “A Cessna Citation rolled off the end of Runway 24 and caught fire after landing at Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Tennessee at 3:40 p.m. today. The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine probable cause of the accident.”
With that being said and the severity of the incident becoming clear in the hours afterward, NBC sports has released a statement claiming that they have been in touch with Dale Jr and were all in agreement that he would take the weekend off to spend time with his family.
” After being discharged from the hospital, we communicated with Dale and his team, and we’re all in agreement that he should take this weekend off to be with his family. We look forward to having him back in the booth next month at Darlington.”
