NASCAR: Five Biggest Surprises and Disappointments So Far This Season

#20 Surprise Darrell Wallace Jr at Daytona

Want to make an impact in your first Cup Series race?

While making an impact means different things to different drivers, one way to make an impact is to run up front. That’s exactly what Darrell Wallace Jr ended up doing in the final laps of the 2018 Daytona 500 and finished second after a last lap duel with eventual winner, Austin Dillon. Wallace Jr even gained a massive following after the race for openly crying and hugging his mom in one of his press interviews.

With that being said, it was a huge turning point for NASCAR, Wallace Jr and even for Richard Petty Motorpsorts, which hadn’t run that well in a while. Unfortunately for Wallace Jr, he slowly started to slip back in the points since that surprising finish and is now in danger of not making the playoffs if he doesn’t win a race before the postseason.
