Surprise: Alex Bowman in his rookie season.
The #88 car might not be making headlines on a weekly basis anymore, but that doesn’t mean that Alex Bowman is getting the job done behind the wheel this season. In fact, Bowman currently sits 15th in the points standings and has a good chance of making the playoffs without even needing to win a race in his first full season.
Of course something could come along in the final races of the season to change that, but Bowman has a 29 point lead on the 17th place spot, which means the drivers behind him will have to beat him. Whether they do that by winning races and guaranteeing themselves a spot in the playoffs remains to be seen, but it’s hard to imagine drivers like Paul Menard, Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Ryan Newman winning before the playoffs.
With that being said, Bowman is in a great position right now to make his first playoff run and barring any surprises over the next couple of races, it looks like he will do that. Another thing that gives Bowman a great chance at making the playoffs is the fact that the upcoming schedule includes races at Michigan Bristol and Pocono, which are all tracks that Jr and his team have won at.
