#5 Kurt Busch
The Stewart Haas Racing driver and former Daytona 500 Champion was a staple of silly season talks for much of last year, but finally settled on a one year deal to return to the #41 car. Despite a relatively strong start to the season, he seems to be less competitive then some of his other teammates, which could be an excuse for Stewart to put someone else in the ride.
Busch could probably quickly remedy the situation by winning a race and guaranteeing him a spot in the 2018 playoffs, but he just doesn’t seem to have that kind of capability right now. In the end, Busch still has plenty of time to make the playoffs and come to an agreement with SHR, but with the youth movement going on and Busch reaching a plateau in his career, it seems like a gamble.
