#1 Bringing in Toyota.
in a move to bring a level of diversity to the sport that had never been seen before, Brian France announced that Toyota would be joining as a manufacturer. The move was highly controversial due to NASCAR being largely a southern sport, but it also created a minority fanbase for the sport and also gained them another longtime sponsor.
In the end, it might have been a move that a lot of NASCAR fans didn’t like and still are upset about to this day, but it put NASCAR in a place of exceptional growth and opened the sport up to even more exposure then originally possible. It also helped create one of the most dominant dynasties in NASCAR history, which is another thing fans dislike.
