” My momma always told if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
Those were the words uttered by Chase Elliott during a post race after being robbed of his first victory and a final four spot at Miami by Denny Hamlin. While Hamlin tried to offer an explanation for the incident, which was that someone was pushing him into Elliott, the apology fell on death ears and Elliott eventually finished the interview by telling reporters that Hamlin wasn’t worth his time.
Of course this drove The NASCAR Universe into a frenzy as they cheered for the second generation driver and while the moment was arguably one of the launching points of Elliott’s career in the Cup Series, Elliott still never elaborated on why the incident infuriated him so much. Fortunately for fans of Elliott, he finally opened up a little bit about the incident and told Motorsports.com while it infuriated him so much
“The stakes are high. Those three weeks leading into Homestead are huge,” Elliott told Motorsport.com in an interview, “We were in a position where we didn’t necessarily have to win to make it to Homestead, but almost, probably was going to have to win one of those three weeks.”
Of course Chase Elliott was never able to recover from the incident at Martinsville and lost out on a chance at making the final four in the closing laps of the fall Phoenix race. Unfortunately for for Hamlin, Elliott repaid the favor from Martinsville by racing The JGR driver super aggressive in the future laps and ultimately costing him a chance in the final four as well.
In the end, hopefully these two drivers can put all this behind them in 2018 and get back to racing for championships for their respective teams. If not however, they risk putting a huge target on their backs and having more races ruined by a last second vengeful payback. Not only that, they risk having another championship season ruined for them as well.
